Introduction to Cloud - DATACOM

  WCD Bank is making a strategic shift to migrate its data, applications, and IT infrastructure from on-premises data centres to cloud-based services. By doing so, WCD Bank can access computing resources on-demand, scale up or down as needed, pay only for what they use, and offload much of the burden of maintaining IT infrastructure to cloud service providers.

There are many phases in the cloud-enabling journey, such as planning, assessment, designing, implementation and migration, optimisation, and monitoring. As WCD Bank lacks the in-house experience to cope with the complexity of the project, Datacom was brought in to fill the gap and lead the project to success as the subject matter expert.

During your first week at Datacom, you will be completing onboarding tasks while joining team meetings to catch up on the project's progress. The team you are joining has just completed the project designing phase and is currently in the implementation phase. WCD Bank requested ‘a big red button' that they could click to deploy a virtual machine (like a normal desktop computer) into the cloud for a contractor to work on. It would have to sit inside of their cloud tenancy, have the access required to some, but not all, of their cloud-based resources, and conform to several other specifications.

You will assist the team to enable the function, with supervision and help from senior team members. As a junior DevOps engineer, you will quickly understand how fast-paced and dynamic our work environments are and "learn as you work" will be your new norm. Due to the rapidly changing nature of DevOps, there will always be a need to ask for and receive help from teammates.

  You have received the following email from your team leader:

Hello!

Today, we will have you focus on setting up the tools we use every day, as well as creating your first application registration on the cloud.

For setting up your machine, we have provided you with some links to resources. Please read the instructions for each item thoroughly and carefully to understand the task, then execute the steps as instructed:

1. Create a GitHub account.
2. Download Visual Studio and configure your User Interface.
3. Create an Azure free account.
   • You will need a credit card to complete this setup (no charge will be posted).
   • Use your GitHub account.
   • Select the Free tier.

1. Register an application with Azure Active Directory.
   • Join the 365 Developer Program: Once you have entered your user information, it might take up to two hours for Azure to have your file updated. Only then can you move on to the next step.
   • Set up your Microsoft 365 E5 developer subscription: Once it is set up successfully, you will receive an email similar to the example provided in the Resources section below. Save it for the next 90 days, as you can use it to explore more training options and access a sandbox to explore cutting-edge technologies.
   • Follow the instructions within the email to access the account dashboard. Explore a bit and then move to the next step.
   • Register an app with Azure Active Directory: Be creative with your application's name. We will not use this app in our overall project, but it is critical to be familiar with registering apps on the cloud.
